Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years I’ve mostly stuck to an hourly rate with a separate negotiable post-production cost.  This often led to a lot of confusion and sticker shock when faced with post-shoot costs.  That’s when I decided to just keep it simple.  Instead of ala-carting my services, I just rolled them all into one and share the final costs upfront. Easy peezy.

If a half-day shoot runs slightly over the 4-hour window due to unforeseen circumstances, technical difficulties, or hold-ups during our shoot I can allow leniency. However, if it runs long because that’s simply how long it needs to take, I need to charge my full-day rate. My time is valuable, as is yours. If we budget a half-day shoot, I’m likely planning the second half of my day to be used to focus on prepping and editing your content.  If that time is taken away, it will likely bleed over into the next day, creating an extended time frame for post-production and taking time away from other potential clients.  As such, I need to be compensated for the extra time needed to deliver your content.

A great use of a full day would include shooting both photo & video content.  With social media content becoming more of a necessity rather than option, often times I’ll be asked to shoot standard content and social media content.  This can lead to taking twice as many photos and videos.  If you’d like me to shoot video content in addition to your photography content, I’d recommend a full day as it will allow me to take my time to ensure the shots we acquire will be as beautiful as possible.  Rushing the process creates content that looks rushed, and as a professional, I want to ensure the content delivered is as perfect as possible.  With a full day, it allows me to bring extra accessories to make sure your content looks great: lighting, gimbals, sliders, etc.

I would even go so far as to encourage you to take advantage of the full 8-hour window to make sure we get absolutely everything you need.

Events tend to be a lot more simple in the post-production process, and also often require a lot less equipment and setup.  Major events, such as multi-day summits and photo booth-style setups would be negotiated at different rates, but standard event coverage is basic enough that a simple flat hourly rate is all I need for my services.

Studio F4 is my shared studio space in Lakeview at the corner of Waveland & Ravenswood.  My studio can be used for headshot/portrait sessions, collaborative editing sessions, meetings, and more.  We have enough seating for 8-10 people, communal desk space if you need a place to setup your computer, high-speed Wi-Fi, and a private rooftop deck with views of the Chicago skyline!

Of course not! While I will insist on using for for interior design portrait photography as it has become part of my trademark look and what you’re paying me for, if you would prefer the use of a different type of camera, I can make that arrangement. Sometimes, medium format just isn’t necessary.  I often shoot my event work using a full-frame 20-megapixel Canon R3 camera and will also use a variety of different cameras for video work.

Also, many times clients will have previously existing content that was shot using a specific camera and lens combination.  If they would like that I use the same combo to retain a similar look to match pre-existing content, that’s a-ok!

While I can certainly try to make concessions if a shoot is last minute, I much prefer a lead time of two weeks at the latest to book a shoot in advance.  This will ensure I have an appropriate amount of time to schedule the shoot and prep for it in advance.

For my half and full-day rates, I do require a non-refundable 50% upfront fee to lock in the days to schedule my services.  I will then charge the other 50% upon delivery of the final assets.  I require payment within 7 days of final invoicing.  You can pay me via check, Zelle, or PayPal.

If a scheduled shoot day changes, the 50% upfront fee still applies to any future dates.  If a shoot is completely canceled, the 50% upfront fee can not be returned.  If the project changes (i.e. one cancels, but another becomes available) it can be applied to a new project.

For events, I only charge upon delivery of final assets.

Payment terms can be negotiated in advance if absolutely necessary.

Absolutely!  Retainer fees can be negotiated depending on the quantity and scope of the projects you have planned, and services will include everything found in the full-day rate sheet.
